Parent Bulletin

Summer 2021

Dear Parents/Carers
I hope this bulletin finds you well.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate students on completing their final assessments. The positive attitudes and resilience shown by examination students this year has been truly impressive. The remote learning day at the end of last half term provided teachers with the crucial time needed away from students to finish marking, review evidence and upload grades for the next stage of the internal process.

We now focus on the various summer events and assessment weeks for all other year groups. The online evening tuition programme will also be starting in the near future for some students alongside our in-school extracurricular provision. Please do encourage your child to attend the after school sessions especially the homework clubs and study sessions for examination year groups. This link will give you an overview of what is on offer over the next 6 weeks.

Finally, we would like to thank again everyone who is following COVID guidance to help stop the spread of Coronavirus. What you have been doing has made a difference and helped to keep infection rates low in school. However, as restrictions have lifted we have seen a significant reduction in the number of home tests reported in school. We continue to promote the importance of home testing in school and although we are no longer able to send out our twice-weekly text alerts, for financial reasons, we would encourage all parents to continue with the home testing. By taking a test twice a week, and self-isolating/booking a PCR test if positive, you and your children are helping to break the chains of transmission and stop the spread of infection. We continue to deal with positive cases in school, which has resulted in a number of students having to self-isolate since March. Our worry is that if home testing drops to low levels then we will not be uncovering hidden cases in the way we have done previously which will result in serious disruption to school and the start of the summer holidays.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
Mrs Kam Grewal-Joy

Y10 Work Experience

28th June - 2nd July

During the week all year 10 students will have the opportunity to have employer encounters, work on employer set tasks and develop the skills they need for the work place. Some of our students will be carrying out work placements in the community while others will take part in work experience activities in school.

Y10 Taster Day

On Wednesday 7th July, Y10 students have the opportunity to explore options post-GCSE. Students who are interested in studying A levels and level 3 BTECs will get the chance to experience the fantastic teaching and outstanding facilities at Meadowhead Sixth Form, and students who prefer a college route will be discovering more about the courses at Chesterfield College. Students will experience a day in the life of a sixth former or college student, from studying at a higher level, to focusing more on their particular areas of interest, to using the facilities, and even wearing their own clothes! It’s always a really enjoyable day, and we look forward to exploring options together!
Students have already picked their options, and they will be given their personal timetables nearer the time.

Y12 - Exploring University Courses

Tutor time for Y12 this half term is dedicated to exploring university courses and producing a personal statement. This will allow students to get a good idea of what courses are available, the content and topics covered, and the requirements for entry. It’s a really exciting time for students to be considering their next steps, and even if students aren’t sure if university is their preferred option they will be able to make fully informed decisions knowing what options are available to them. There will also be support for students looking to go into employment, apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships, to ensure that every student makes the right choices for their future.

Y12 - Careers Meetings

Our dedicated careers adviser, Cerys Evans, will be meeting with every Y12 student at some point this half term to discuss their career aspirations and the practical steps needed to make the dream a reality! Cerys will be meeting with students in small groups or one-to-one to ensure that every option is covered. Students are free to attend more than one meeting if they are still considering their options. We encourage our students to have the highest possible aspirations – the sky’s the limit!

Thank a teacher

After a really difficult year because of coronavirus, we want to ensure we finish the school year in a really positive way. We will hold celebration assemblies in the final week to reflect on student achievements.

Another way to have a really positive finish to the year is by saying “thank you” to a teacher or another member of Meadowhead staff before the summer break.
